Rehoboam's decision caused the kingdom of Israel to be split into two separate kingdoms-the Northern Kingdom (Israel) and the Southern Kingdom (Judah). Each kingdom was ruled by a succession of kings. Some were good and followed God's law, but many worshiped idols. When Hezekiah became the king of Judah, he did away with idol worship and served God. When the Assyrians tried to capture Jerusalem, Hezekiah put his trust in God, and God rescued the people from the Assyrians.
